Priligy (Dapoxetine)
Priligy is a prescription oral medication specifically designed to treat premature ejaculation (PE) in adult men.
Priligy is used to treat premature ejaculation (PE) in adult men aged 18 to 64. It is designed for men who regularly ejaculate within less than two minutes of penetration, experience significant distress or interpersonal difficulty because of it, and feel they have little to no control over when they ejaculate.
HOW IT WORKS
The active pharmaceutical ingredient in Priligy is Dapoxetine.
Dapoxetine belongs to a class of medications called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). While older SSRIs are primarily used as daily antidepressants, dapoxetine was specially engineered to be absorbed and cleared by the body very rapidly.
It works by increasing the activity of serotonin in the nervous system. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter (a chemical messenger) involved in sending signals throughout your body, including those that trigger ejaculation. By keeping serotonin levels higher at the neural synapses, Dapoxetine delays the ejaculation reflex and extends the time before climaxing.
HOW TO TAKE
Take one tablet 1 to 3 hours before anticipated sexual activity. Swallow the tablet whole with at least one full glass of water. This helps reduce the risk of feeling dizzy or fainting. It can be taken with or without food.
Priligy is strictly an on-demand medication. Never take it more than once every 24 hours. It is not meant for continuous daily use.
SIDE EFFECTS
Like all prescription medications, Priligy can cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them.
Common side effects (affecting more than 1 in 100 men) are dizziness and headache; nausea or an upset stomach; insomnia or feeling unusually tired; increased blood pressure.
MISSED DOSE
Because Priligy is an on-demand medication taken only when needed, there is no risk of a missed dose in the traditional sense. Simply take it when preparing for sexual activity, keeping the 24-hour limit in mind.
OVERDOSE
Taking more than the prescribed dose of Priligy significantly increases the severity of side effects, particularly extreme nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and a dangerous drop in blood pressure that can lead to fainting. If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention or contact your local poison control center.
WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS
Before taking Priligy, it is critical to review your medical history with a doctor.
Do not take Priligy if you have a history of heart failure, heart valve problems, a pacemaker, or ischemic heart disease.
If you have a history of fainting (syncope) or low blood pressure, avoid this medication, as it can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure.
Do not use Priligy if you have a history of severe depression, mania, or bipolar disorder.
Avoid alcohol while taking Priligy. Combining them increases the risk of fainting, injury, and enhanced sedative effects.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Priligy has high potential for severe interactions. Do not take it within 14 days of taking MAOIs (antidepressants), Thioridazine, Lithium, Linezolid, Tramadol, St. John's Wort, or other SSRIs. It should also not be combined with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (like Ketoconazole or Ritonavir) or recreational drugs.
STORAGE
Keep the tablets in their original packaging to protect them from moisture. Store them at room temperature, safely out of reach of children and pets.
Please note, this summary does not replace professional advice. Always talk to your prescribing doctor or pharmacist before starting Priligy to ensure it is safe for your unique health profile.
